Lahti Conservatory
Lahti Conservatory was originally established in the city of Vyborg in 1918. The conservatory was relocated to Lahti in 1940. Today, more than a thousand children, youths and adults practice their skills in music at Lahti Conservatory under the supervision of some 100 qualified instructors. In addition to taking individual lessons in their chosen instruments, everybody has the opportunity to participate in orchestra or ensemble activities. There are, for example, four orchestras for wind instruments only, one for each level of gained experience.
Lahti Conservatory offers upper secondary level education in music leading to Vocational Qualification in Music (level 3 of the EC classification, upper secondary level, ISCED 3). It is a 3-year study programme with 120 credit units (1 credit unit equals 40 hours of work). In this secondary level there are 45 full-time students .
Having also a music school with 1000 pupils Lahti Conservatory is always filled with music. The music school department offers goal-oriented studies in music from kindergarten level to the adult departments.
Education in ensemble playing has always been very important at the Lahti Conservatory. We have symphony orchestra, two chamber orchestras, a concert wind band and three wind bands for younger students, plus the Pops Orchestra, and many smaller ensembles. The orchestras have released numerous CD’s and have been on several concert tours abroad, including UK, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Estonia, Spain,Austria, and all the Scandinavian countries.
